Tansen was gifted musician and singer who sang in the court of the mighty Mughal ruler, Akbar. One day, after listening to his music, Akbar said to him in awe, "Tansen, I believe you are the greatest musician of all times. There can be none who can make music like you do."
In response, Tansen bowed his head respectfully and said, "It is an honour to hear such kind words, my lord, but the truth is that there is one other person whose music is better than mine. I am nothing in comparison to him." Akbar stared at him in disbelief. "Tell me, who is this person?" he asked. Tansen replied, "Swami Haridas, my lord. But he will never agree to come to the court to sing. He believes a saint's place is not in the court of a king."
"Then we will go to him," said Akbar.
So Tansen and Akbar travelled to a deep forest where the great musician lived in a hut. They found him deep in meditation. Time passed and suddenly, just before sunrise, the saint burst forth into melody. The trees and the flowers, the squirrels and the birds, the breeze and the stream were all enchanted by Haridas' music. As for Akbar, it was as if he was under a spell.
Several days passed but Akbar could not forget the effect the song had had on him. Then one day, he summoned Tansen. "How is it that although he is your teacher and you sing the same song, even you cannot sing like he does?" Tansen answered humbly, "My lord, I sing for you, at your command. I sing for the praise that you give me, for the joy that my music brings you. However, my master's music flows from his heart as an act of love for the one who is greater than you-the emperor of emperors. That is the difference."
