    Read this passage.

The Olympics originated as a festival in ancient Greece and had become very popular by the fourth century BCE. However, women were not allowed to participate in the main festival. Instead, there was a separate athletic contest held for women, in honour of the goddess Hera. It was organised and supervised by a committee of sixteen women. These games consisted of races and women competed against each other in the same age group. The Heraean Games, as they were called, were not considered as prestigious as the men's competition but nevertheless, were taken seriously. Victors were given crowns of olive leaves and could have portraits of themselves placed in the sacred grove at Olympia.

However, the one sport in the Olympics which allowed the participation of women was chariot racing. This was because it was held outside the sacred venue which women were barred from entering. In fact, the first woman Olympic champion was a Spartan princess named Cynisca. She won in the four-horse chariot race in 396 BCE and 392 BCE. She was also the first woman to become a champion horse-trainer when her horses and chariot competed and won in the ancient Olympic Games.

Centuries later, in the first modern Olympics of 1896, women were still not allowed to take part. But there was one unofficial female competitor in the marathon. She was a poor Greek woman named Stamata Revithi. Although she arrived at the venue, she was not allowed to compete with the men. So, she ran the entire stretch of the marathon the next day, which was something that even many of the male runners could not do. When she reached the stadium for the final lap, she was stopped from entering it. So, she completed the race outside the stadium. In 1900, women were finally allowed to participate in the Olympics and since then, they have excelled in all sports.
