    Read this passage.

In Yellowstone National Park, wolves were hunted to extinction in 1946. Then, in 1996, scientists released a pack of fourteen wolves inside the park. Seventy years later, the return of the wolves helped restore the forests and made wildlife return to Yellowstone National Park. How did this happen?

As the top predators in Yellowstone, wolves feed on animals lower down the food chain and are not preyed upon by any other animals. With the wolves gone, herbivores like elk had no natural enemies within the park. Their populations exploded and they grazed the vegetation. When the wolves returned, elk numbers were kept in check. They began to avoid grazing river banks and valleys where wolves could hunt them easily. So, trees like Willow, Cottonwood and Aspen which were previously eaten up by the elk, started to flourish. Songbirds came back to nest in the high branches of these trees, whose roots held the soil and prevented riverbanks from being washed away. Beavers, which fed on the bark of the Willow and Aspen also came back. They built dams in streams which made them flow more slowly. The streams became rivers that flowed more steadily. The steady flow of the waters meant that less soil got washed away. The wolves, thus, helped change rivers and rebuild Yellowstone.

This observation tells us two things. When we interfere in an ecosystem without understanding our impact on it, we may end up destroying it. However, if we want to save the planet, we must consider letting our wild places be and allowing nature to do the rest.
