William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in England. He was a poet, actor and playwright. He is often referred to as the England's national poet, and is also known as the Bard of Avon.

During his short lifetime, he wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets on varied themes. He is widely considered as the greatest playwright in the English language. 

He died on 23 April 1616.
