Emily Dickinson (1830 - 1886) was an American poet whose fame was primarily posthumous. Her poetry was heavily influenced by the poets of seventeenth century England. She, along with Walt Whitman, is regarded as the founder of a uniquely American poetic voice. The first volume of her works was published in 1890 and the last in 1955.
To fight aloud is very brave
But gallanter, I know
Who charge within the bosom
The cavalry of woe.
Who win, and nations do not see,
Who fall, and none observe,
Whose dying eyes no country
Regards with patriot love.
We trust, in plumed procession,
For such the angels go
Rank after rank, with even feet
And uniforms of snow.
