John Lennon (1940 - 1980) formed 'The Beatles' with George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr in 1958. In 1964 'The Beatles' became the first British band to find huge success in the USA. Not long after The Beatles broke up in 1970, Lennon released his solo album John Lennon-Plastic Ono Band. In 1971 he released Imagine, the most successful and critically acclaimed of all Lennon's post-Beatles efforts. The title track was included in Rolling Stone magazine's all-time best songs list.
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will live as one.
There are three things the poet asks the reader to imagine. What are those things?
What does the poet hope that you will join him in doing?
Why does the poet want a world without countries?
Why does the poet want a world without possessions?
What kind of world does the poet want us to imagine and dream about? How will this be different from the world in which we live now?
What are the things that the poet describes about the world we live in that he does not like? How does the poet feel we can change those things?
