Nayantara Sehgal, now in her nineties,is one of the foremost female writers of Indian literature in English. She is an extended member of the Nehru - Gandhi family. She is a Sahitya Academy Award winner for her novel "Rich Like Us" which deals with political and feminist themes.

Sehgal's primary focus has always been the political situation pre and post independent India. She has also been vocal through her righting advocating equal rights for all.

Although related to the strongest political family in the country, she herself did not actively  participate in politics and infact had a fall out with the Nehru family.

Her daughter is a well known journalist and feminist herself.

In most of Nayantara Sehgal's writing, we get an image of India under British rule and also there is invaluable information, acquired first hand, regarding the freedom movement.

She still occasionally writes, her latest a novella - "The Fate of Butterflies", was published in 2019.

Another interesting fact, she actually returned the Sahitya Academy Award in 2015 to protest increasing intolerance in the country.

Nayantara Sehgal remains one of the most imposing figures in Indian literary circles and for her gesture of returning the award she received praise from members of the UN.
