The author, R.K. Narayan was one of the foremost writers of Indian literature in English. He was a contemporary of Mulk Raj Anand, also very well known for his contribution to Indian literature in English.
Most of Narayan's work revolves around a fictional town in southern India called Malgudi. Many have considered his descriptions in his books, specially of Malgudi as a semi-autobiographical account of his childhood.
He was born in Madras still under British rule. Many in his family became well known, especially his younger brother, Laxman who was a cartoonist known for his wit throughout the country.
Narayan would go on to win the Sahitya Academy Award for his novel "The Guide", which was later adopted into a movie starring Kamal Hassan.
