William Wordsworth (1770-1850) was born in 1770 in Cockermouth, in the Lake District, England. The majestic beauty of the District give rise to his deep love of nature, which was reflected in his poetry. In 1843 he became England's Poet Laureate. Well-known poems by the poet include Tintern Abbey and The Solitary Reaper.
On April 15, 1802 Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy saw a large number of golden daffodils growing on the bank of a lake, inspired by the lovely sight of the daffodils, Wordsworth composed this poem.
I wander'd lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze
Continuous as the scars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretch'd in never ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
