Stories are as ancient as the language. They have always remained vital to people’s lives. Stories make us aware of our tradition, customs, beliefs, rituals, values and attitudes; in other words, it is the stories that narrate our way of life to us. There are different kinds of stories like fairy tales, folk tales, trickster tales, tall tales, myths, legends, fables and others. Among these folk tales, some are closely related to our everyday life. These stories speak about the ordinary experiences of our families and attend to our needs. They have been passed on orally from generation to generation until they were recorded in words.

Folk tales perform the important functions of educating, entertaining and preserving human cultures in different societies. These tales are not limited to a particular period or group of people but transcend time and place. Interestingly enough, these tales undergo transformation and are evolved according to the needs of occasion and society. Therefore the significance of folk tales is immense in our life because they are essentially entwined with us.

Folk tales carry forward our cultural and literary heritage with distinct messages which is helpful in evolvement of a civilization.
