Love come to Flora asking for a flower
That world of flowers be undisputed queen.
The lily and the rose, long, long had been
Rivals for that high honour. Bards of power
Had sung their claims. "The rose can never tower
Like the pale lily with her Juno mien" −
"But is the lily lovelier?" Thus between
Flower-factions rang the strife in Psyche's bower.
"Give me a flower delicious as the rose
And stately as the lily in her pride" −
But of what colour?" − "Rose-red," Love first chose.
Then prayed − "No, lily-white − or, both provide;"
And Flora gave the lotus, "rose-red" dyed,
And "lily-white" − the queenliest flower that blows.
Toru Dutt has written both descriptive and narrative verse, but even her narrative poems have rich descriptions of nature. Much of her short life was spent in two spacious garden-homes. Rambagan and Baugmaree, in West Bengal. These gardens shaped her keen sense of observation and her response to colour. 'The Lotus' is a sonnet. In this poem, Toru Dutt presents the idea that the Indian Lotus is the most beautiful of all flowers.

What does Love want from Flora?
Love wanted a special flower from Flora that was as delicious as the rose and as stately as the lily. It should also bear both the colours red and white.
Which flowers had been fighting for the highest place of honour? Who were the supporters of the two competing flowers?
There are two ways in which the lily and the rose are different. One of them is their appearance. What is special about the appearance of the lily? In what way is the rose special?
The other difference between the rose and the lily is in their colour. Say how the flowers are different in that respect.
The lily is white in colour projecting purity and solemness whereas the rose is red in colour exhibiting warmth and love.
Which flower has the mien of Juno? Which quality is highlighted here? What, in contrast, is the quality of the other flower?
