Everyone Sang

Siegfried Sasson

About Siegfried Sasson

Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967) served during the First World War as a captain. At first he was very excited and felt honoured to be in the war and fighting for his country; but then, when he saw the horrors of war at first hand, he began to speak out against it. He wrote some moving poetry about the hardships and tragedy felt in war. Here you can imagine what joy people can feel from hearing a song.

Everyone suddenly burst out singing;
And I was filled with such delight
As prisoned birds must find in freedom
Winging wildly across the white
Orchards and dark-green fields; on--on--and out of sight.
Everyone's voice was suddenly lifted,
And beauty came like the setting sun.
My heart was shaken with tears: and horror
Drifted away ... O, but Everyone
Was a bird; and the song was wordless; the singing will never be done.
