In the Later Vedic Age, the social status of women was reduced due to several factors. Child marriage, self-immolation/ sati was common practice and widow-marriage was a social taboo. During the same time window, in the Roman Empire marriage was regarded as a duty and a matter of upholding family pride. Most marriages were arranged by fathers and set up as alliances between families. Girls at the age of 12 and boys when 14 were married. Marriage in ancient Rome was a strictly monogamous institution. Gradually the Roman Empire evolved to be heading towards attaining equality for women. Roman women could own land, write their own wills and appear in court during that time.
